Star Wars Insider #66 - The Art of Shaak Ti -- Week Three: Color Steps Part Two
I'm currently busy this December illustrating a variety of Star Wars projects as things gear up into overdrive for Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. New features, reviews and tutorials for Comics 101 will return early next year so enjoy this look back at one of my favorite articles. Happy Holidays!
After I complete the blocking in of the flat color on Shaak Ti in Photoshop I open the file in Painter and begin rendering the character more fully with shadows and highlights. I use Painter's Watercolor brush from the Brushes palette set around 40% opacity and without grain in the Options palette.

Using my graphic shadows as a guide I begin painting in my dark values by following the same lighting I established in pen and ink for the drawing. For my color shading values I simply select the flat base color of the area I'm about to render with the Eyedropper tool and then adjust that color to a slightly darker 20% to 40% version of the tone to paint with.

For rendering the highlights on Shaak Ti I use the Dodge tool at a low opacity (about 10% to 15%) in Photoshop after drying my wet paint in Painter and closing out of that program (saving the file as a TIFF). Sometimes I find it necessary or efficient to work back and forth between the two programs when developing the rendering on the characters with each program's different tools and techniques.

The following steps showcase the completed rendering on Shaak Ti using Painter and Photoshop and then beginning the same rendering process in Painter for Chancellor Palpatine.

Next week we'll continue looking at the rendering process for the rest of the characters in the illustration including Plo Koon and Mace Windu. See you next time!
