Art tips and techniques, reviews and interviews from my studio. Archived here and at World Famous Comics. Comics 101 for 07/22/2004 Designing Star Wars Aliens! Episode Four: You must do what you feel is right of course. This week, July 21st - 25th, I'm attending Comic Con International in San Diego, California with Justin from World Famous Comics. You can find us located in Artist Alley for the show at table CC10 with Star Wars artists Jan Duursema and Dan Parsons (Star Wars: Republic, Jedi: Dooku, Jedi: Aayla). I'll have plenty of Star Wars art to sell and sign for fans so I hope to see some of you there! Friday, July 23rd will be Star Wars Day at the event and Star Wars fans can look forward to a day of panels, presentations, and fun all about the galaxy far, far away. And kids age 12 and under can join me on Sunday July 25th for my panel, 'Padawan Penciling: Learn to Draw Star Wars with Artist Joe Corroney', 12:30 P.M. in Room 1A. To find out more about Kids Day at the show head over to this Star Wars.com update. For more information on Star Wars Day at the Comic Con International check out this news update at Star Wars.com here. And for a sneak preview of my sketch card artwork for the upcoming Star Wars: Heritage Trading Cards set be sure to stop by the Topps booth in the Star Wars Pavilion area. Keep your browser connected to the official Star Wars website for up to the minute information and daily Comic Con news and anouncements during the show. See you in San Diego! And now back to our regularly scheduled feature... For these illustrations, I obviously chose the 'comic book route' in terms of style and final color technique. I wanted to keep these characters faithful to their original Marvel Comics roots but at the same time use the current computer coloring techniques seen in most comic art these days to bring them abit more up to date. The original artwork is penciled on 2 ply Bristol board with vellum surface. As opposed to the plate finish, I prefer the texture in vellum bristol since I like how the graphite of my pencil interacts with the fibers. Using my Hunt's 102 dip pen and Speedball India ink I begin inking them. The following set of drawings are the final inked line art. See ya next time! -Joe Recent Columns:
