The Emperor's Hammer On-Line Chat Interview - Part Two

This past November I participated in my first on-line chat interview with a Star Wars gaming fan website called Emperor's Hammer. They're an organization of online Star Wars gaming fans founded in December 1994 dedicated to recreating the excitement and adventure of the Star Wars saga online.

I hope you enjoyed reading part one of my live, on-line interview last week but if you missed it you can check it out here or in the Comics 101 Archives.

Enjoy part two!

K-Idanian: From Isojalka: What do you think about SW-short films that are not made by LucasFilm?

* Genno has joined #emperor's_hammer

* CM_Curtis has joined #emperor's_hammer

* Krayt has joined #emperor's_hammer

* `Kerrigan has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: I think there's alot of good ones out there but only really a handful of short SW films that are exceptional and I could watch more than once. I really liked the one with the two Sith battling for the place at the Emperor's side on the dark side planet. I do love short films. I used to make them myself while in college. I loved the editing process so I know the huge amount of work that goes into short films and appreciate them quite abit. Let's just say though that not every person with a camera and editing software *should* be making movies.

* X sets mode: +o `Kerrigan

GA_Ronin: hehe...how true

JCorroney: I've met Kevin Rubio, I loved Troops. He's a nice guy. But some of other shorts I've seen get a little cliche'. How many short films with Jedi fighting Sith with double bladed lightsabers do we really need to see? :) -fin-

K-Idanian: DS_away would like to know: What Star Wars projects did you work on so far?

JCorroney: I've done about 10 or 12 SW books for West End Games including some unpblished work for them.

JCorroney: I've illustrated for about 7 issues of SW Gamer magazine. A few RPG products for WotC, Holonet News.com for LFL last summer, recently an issue of SW Insider.

K-Idanian: ...including The Rebllion Era Sourcebook and the new Power of the Jedi Sourcebook. :)

JCorroney: And various SW fan magazines as well. -fin-

* Cypher has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: That's right, Kieran. Those were really fun projects, especially the PotJ Sourcebook.

K-Idanian: They are nice pictures. I saw them in the book and on your website! :)

JCorroney: Thanks again. I got to illustrate my own Expanded Universe character for those pieces. He actually first appeared in an issue of SW Gamer and I used him again for PotJ SB.

JCorroney: Hopefully, I'll get to include him in some other projects eventually. -fin-

K-Idanian: I was wondering who is your favorite Lord of the Rings character?

JCorroney: It's a tough call between Aragorn and Gandalf. They both were played so amazingly by the actors. Viggo was awesome but so was Ian McKellan. -fin-

K-Idanian: I agree. I loved Fellowship! I'm really looking forward to Two Towers! :)

JCorroney: Two Towers does look really good! I can't wait!

K-Idanian: About your Expanded Universe character, did you create him through RPG or writing?

JCorroney: I created him just for an illustration where I needed to include a Jedi. The scene was pretty much left open to interpretation for me so I could include any kind of heroic characters I wanted. This was for the game article called Kashyyyk in Flames for SW Gamer #4.

JCorroney: My good friend who builds professional SW props and weapons and is a costume designer made his own lightsaber and Jedi outfit so I used him for my model reference for the painting. He also happens to be my webmaster of my official site. Then I named his character Kai Justiss and thus my EU character was born :) -fin-

K-Idanian: Cool! I made by own lightsaber and tunic as well. It looks pretty good. :)

* Isojalka has joined #emperor's_hammer

K-Idanian: AD Mell Kerrigan would like to know: Do you get "artists block" so to speak and how do you overcome this?

JCorroney: That's cool!

JCorroney: Yeah, unfortunately there is such a thing called artist's block and I know it all too well. Usually, I find I have to sometimes just step away from my drawing table for awhile, go see a movie, read some comic books, maybe watch some bad TV or play video games, maybe listen to music. All of these things usually end up taking my mind off something frustrating project wise and usually end up re-inspiring me. -fin-

* ch-afk is now known as CorranH

* `Alucard is now known as Al-Away

* `Kerrigan notes to try it next time he gets frustrated whilst designing ;)

K-Idanian: Isokalka would like to know: Do you play SW-games? What are your favourites? Games don't match exactly with movies. Comments?

JCorroney: I used to play the WEG SW rpg in college so I was really familiar with the products and mechanics of the game. I think that helped me secure work on a regular basis from them. Most of the SW games I play now are the video games.

* Calvin has joined #emperor's_hammer

* LCM_Ace has quit IRC (Signed off)

JCorroney: I can't wait to get my hands on Bounty Hunter for GameCube (I own one of those too) or Jedi Outcast or KotOR. I guess you could say I *love* SW video games. -fin-

K-Idanian: :) They are sweet games!

JCorroney: I loved Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron on N64 and Rogue Squadron 2.

K-Idanian: yeah! :)

K-Idanian: I'm thinking about getting into SW: RPG. I'm currently playing LotR: RPG. Do you believe it is worth the time to learn SW:RPG?

* Linoge has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: Unfortunately I dont have time to play rpgs anymore because of my schedule. I usually only play video games to wind down at the end of the day for a few hours or maybe for a short break inbetween assignments or a project during the day. That's why I can get away with playing video games like I do ;) -fin-

JCorroney: Any more questions?

K-Idanian: A few... if that's ok with you.

JCorroney: Sure!

K-Idanian: LilHawke would like to know: Who thought up the Gungans?

JCorroney: I'm sure that was definitely a George Lucas decision :)

JCorroney: Though his team of artists and designers at the Ranch most likely influenced the look of those characters and I think his son came up with the name for them. -fin-

K-Idanian: LilHawke would also like to know: Which movie/TV show you most enjoyed doing concept art or whatever for?

JCorroney: Star Wars all the way, LilHawke! I've had the most fun and have always felt the most satisifed whenever I'm working on a SW project.

JCorroney: Nothing is more fun than creating or illustrating SW characters and stories for me. -fin-

K-Idanian: GA Ronin would like to know: What do you think of internet Star Wars fan/game clubs in general and the Emperor's Hammer in particular?

JCorroney: I'm not real familiar with the fan websites centered around the video or online games except for a few based on the SW RPG (since it pays to do research on what the fans like and what they want to see). Even though I keep my SW video gaming addiction more on a personal level I think it's great that there are websites like yours for fans of the games out there to communicate and correspond through.

* CTXclr has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: Thats what makes anything about SW so great, it's usually a really positive experience whether it's games or movies or books and there are other SW fansites I like to visit regularly for those same reasons. -fin-

K-Idanian:Can you stay in chat a little longer and can we send e-mails to you?

JCorroney: Sure, I can hang out for another fifteen minutes answering questions if you want.

JCorroney: Anyone can email me questions too. My email is joe@joecorroney.com.

`Kerrigan: Good day everyone, thx for talking to us Joe! :)

K-Idanian: Mr. Corroney, do you have any questions for us?

JCorroney: Sure. What does everyone think of my SW art for WotC so far or for any of the SW projects I've done?

GA_Ronin: We love it !

K-Idanian: I really like the art! :)

K-Idanian: It has a nice real look to it.

AD_mBind: I like the line drawing look to it, its often harder to make something look as good in that technique.

AD_mBind: As compared to paiting/airbrushing and such.

MAJ_Auto: In the words of Vader, "Impressive, most impressive".

JCorroney: Thanks guys!

GA_Ronin: Mr. Corroney...thanks so much for taking the time to meet with us...Btw, you have now earned the honorary EH Rank of "General" for conducting this interview...:)

K-Idanian: I'd like to thank you again, Mr. Corroney, for making it to this interview. You had very well thought out answers! The members really appreciate it!

K-Idanian: You really had a lot of patience getting IRC to work and you were a great sport about it!

K-Idanian: You're more than welcome to stop back anytime! :)

K-Idanian: Thank you very much for attending! I hope you had an enjoyable time!

K-Idanian: :::RELEASE THE TIES!::: :)

* K-Idanian sets mode: -m

Isojalka: You know Grand Admiral Thrawn? He likes to study art and that way gather knowledge about his enemies and find weaknesses.

JCorroney: I actually got to illustrate GA Thrawn for a new SW project recently! He's one of my favorite SW characters especially in the EU.

GA_Ronin: cool interview...

CM_Curtis: yeah real cool interview

JCorroney: Thanks guys!

* `Malik has joined #emperor's_hammer

GA_Ronin: I have to go unfortunately, SALUTE

AD_mBind: Bye Ronin, take care :)

* AD_mBind salutes

Thorin: Joe, I'm curious, what work have you done for Star Trek ? *ducks from the eggs*

K-Idanian: Bye, sir...

* CM_Gelton salutes

GA_Ronin: Enjoy the chat... we have some energetic members... bye!

LilHawke: I like Star Trek, too

* `Mark salutes

Isojalka: Joe: SW computer/console games don't match exactly with movies. Comments?

* GA_Ronin has left #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: I did work for the Star Trek RPG published by LUG

CM_Gelton: Yeah, Star Trek :)

* Cypher has left #emperor's_hammer

RA_Wem: \\//| live long and prosper.

K-Idanian: EH Members, please don't ask Joe many questions. We don't want to flood him. :)

Isojalka: Great timing Cypher! You missed whole interview :P

* Krayt has left #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: The games are meant to be their own experience and for gameplay reasons. To make it fun and interesting for players they can't 'always' match the movies for those reasons I feel.

FA_Brad: C'ya all I'm going...

FA_Brad: SALUTE

Thorin: OK Joe, thanks a lot for the whole interview, very informative ;) Come back someday.

LilHawke: Mr. Corroney, did you also did the second Men in Black or did they just use some of your pictures from the first one?

AD_mBind: same on the rpg's really

JCorroney: I'll come back anytime you invite me :)

AD_mBind: all the various games are made for game enjoyment more as accuracy

* FA_Brad has quit IRC (Quit: Make an impact, not just an impression)

AD_mBind: you can't expect SW Monopoly to be accurrate ;)

JCorroney: Nope, the artwork I did for Men in Black were for books from the same publisher I worked on for the original SW RPG.

* Brakka has joined #emperor's_hammer

LilHawke: Oh

* Tiss has joined #emperor's_hammer

* Aeishline has joined #emperor's_hammer

* Von-Rein has joined #emperor's_hammer

LilHawke: Joe: you probably already answered this but what does it take to do what you do?

JCorroney: It takes alot of dedication, positive support, practice, practice, practice...

JCorroney: Most importanly you have to *love* to do it and eventually you'll be able to.

* Isojalka has quit IRC (Quit: Time here is nearly 2100. Thank you to Joe Corroney for his answers to my questions)

LilHawke: Joe, FYI, for a while, my SW character for this club was half-Wookiee

* Tiss has joined #emperor's_hammer

AD_mBind: half-Wookie?

DS_away: Half-Wookie, half what? :P

LilHawke: yup

LilHawke: human

Wem_DTP: ...and I guess no one of us wants to know the details of your....creation....

DS_away: So you had your human mother having relations with your Wookiee father?... how sick is that? :p

`Destavol: Bah, A chick half-Wookiee?

Thorin: Joe, thanks again for doing the Interview, we really do appreciate it, and most of us don't need sedatives, behave everyone, I gotta run.

JCorroney: Not sure if I could handle drawing a half-Wookiee.. sounds a little too crazy!

LilHawke: not really but... :P

LilHawke: I thought that there was going to be another trilogy after Episode 6.

DS_away: Mind, Lucas is rich... you would have to pay him lots :p

AD_mBind:The plan changed a few times.

DS_away: Yes, I think 3 more movies Is possible.

* Sterling is now known as Ster|AFK

JCorroney: After Episode 3... no more SW movies.

`Destavol: Joe can you give me a little info on something. I was doing my reports during the interview so it might have been asked and answered. Is there gonna be an Ep7?

AD_mBind: At first he said he had enough material for 12 movies, then a "trilogy of trilogy", meaning 9.

DS_away: Or perhaps Star Wars movies about other eras... like 2000 years in the past?

BG_Zsinj: He's said he'd contract the other 3 out if someone good enough came along.

JCorroney: I don't think so, Zsinj.

Wem_DTP: :(

JCorroney: Trust me... this is it.

DS_away: or 2000 years in the future?

AD_mBind: Then by RotJ everyone was getting fed up with it or something.

`Destavol: Well I guess that answered my question :P

LilHawke: No way!

`Destavol: No more movies?

Dash-: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

JCorroney: That was a long time ago when GL mentioned there would be more. He was young, optimistic then :)

* Dash- acts like he's been shot.

Wem_DTP: Well, they can concentrate on getting some good SW flight sims into the air---eeh, vacuum.

AD_mBind: Yup

* Dash- ducks from people shooting him

AD_mBind: Basically if he does 3 more he'd be very old by the time the last is ready.

DS_away: Joe, if Episode III makes enough money or he needs money cause of bad businesses he will make more :p

AD_mBind: I doubt it.

JCorroney: As fun as a thought like this could be, I wouldn't want a really old, senile George Lucas making 3 more SW movies anyway. He's taken enough flack for just trying to get the prequels made as it is and deserves a vacation after getting this new trilogy completed.

DS_away: So mind? He can give it to someone else, or he can work till 90 years old :p

AD_mBind: After RotJ he really didn't want any more of it... took 16 years to convince him.

JCorroney: I wouldnt want someone else making SW movies. It wouldn't work or be the same really.

AD_mBind: And yes, I'd love more movies but I'm already happy we got these 3 new ones.

AD_mBind: We'd end up getting KJA writing the script or something like that ;)

Dash-: lol

Dash-: Naah, give em to good ol' Tim.

K-Idanian: I think Zahn would be a good script writer.

Dash-: yeah

JCorroney: I'm positive SW will live on in other media, just not actual films.

DS_away: Perhaps a TV Series? :p

JCorroney: Ya never know ;)

Dash-: lol

AD_mBind: Episode VII "Another Imperial Super Weapon" Episode VIII "The Empire Strikes Back Once More"...

K-Idanian: Books and art, most likely. :)

DS_away: It's weird they never had a TV Series.

AD_mBind: They did really.

BG_Zsinj: Yes they did :P

Dash-: the Ewok thing?

DS_away: The X-Wing Series on TV Would be cool.

AD_mBind: Droids and Ewoks cartoons.

Dash-: lol

AD_mBind: Plus 2 Ewok movies

DS_away: Ewoks don't count :p

JCorroney: Ahem, SW Holiday Special anyone? That's why there should only be the 6 movies. No more TV for SW... unless it's cartoons.

AD_mBind: I still like the cartoon in the Holiday Special though.

JCorroney: i should get going guys. This has been fun.

AD_mBind: Kinda in the style of "heavy metal"

Dash-: Byeee!

K-Idanian: Thank you once again for coming, Mr. Corroney!

DS_away: OK

DS_away: c'ya, General Corroney.

LilHawke: I like your art, the Crest of Queen Amidala!

LilHawke: Thanks for coming Mr. Corroney!

AD_mBind: Thanks, and hopefully see you around :)

LilHawke: It's been cool to meet ya!

JCorroney: Thanks LilHawke! Thanks everybody!

K-Idanian: Take care, Mr. Corroney!

* LilHawke waves

JCorroney: Be sure to check out my site www.joecorroney.com for more SW art soon! Drop me an email anytime too. Take care everybody! May the Force be with you!

LilHawke: Will do!

K-Idanian: Thanks again! :)

See ya next week for a new Comics 101 column!
