The Emperor's Hammer On-Line Chat Interview - Part One

This past November I participated in my first on-line chat interview with a Star Wars gaming fan website called Emperor's Hammer. They're an organization of online Star Wars gaming fans founded in December 1994 dedicated to recreating the excitement and adventure of the Star Wars saga online.

In the live chat I discussed my Star Wars Gamer and RPG art for Wizards of the Coast, my upcoming work for Star Wars Insider magazine and illustrating for LucasFilm's official Episode II website, HoloNet News.com. It was abit of a chore just typing fast enough answers to keep up with all of the members asking me questions in the chat forum in real time but regardless it was a really fun experience for me and I had great time talking shop with so many Star Wars fans in one place.

I hope you enjoy reading part one of this live interview in the following transcript and check back here next week for part two where I discuss my expanded universe Jedi character Kai Justiss (check him out in this official Star Wars art I created here and here), Star Wars video games, my thoughts on The Lord of the Rings films, Star Wars fan films and the future of Star Wars beyond Episode III.

Session Start: Sat Nov 02 12:44:00 2002
Session Ident: #emperor's_hammer

* Logging #emperor's_hammer to 'logs\#emperor's_hammer(JoeCorroney).UnderNet'

* Retrieving #emperor's_hammer info...

K-Idanian: The Emperor's Hammer is very pleased and honored you welcome you, Joe Corroney

K-Idanian: The membership would like me to thank you for taking time out of your day to come and talk with us.

JCorroney: Hey no problem. This is fun.

JCorroney: Hi, everybody. How many people are online in this chat room right now? I'm curious.

* K-Idanian sets mode: +m

FA_Brad: 41

K-Idanian: 43 at the moment...

JCorroney: Cool

FA_Brad: (2 are bots)

K-Idanian: For the first part of the interview, the channel will be moderated. Please message any questions you may have for Mr. Corroney to K-Idanian.

K-Idanian: The second part, if Mr. Corroney is up to it, will be unmoderated and he may mingle with the members :)

JCorroney: Sure, Im up for a little mingling after.

K-Idanian Oh, and for the members of the Emperor's Hammer, please remember that all of our Codes of Conduct are in effect. :)

K-Idanian: Mr. Corroney, our Fleet Commander is with us today.

K-Idanian: GA_Ronin founded the Emperor's Hammer online group over eight years ago, and continues to lead this amazing group!

GA_Ronin: Thanks, Keiran...and welcome Mr. Corroney

GA_Ronin: It's a pleasure to conduct this interview with you.

JCorroney: Thanks.

K-Idanian Finally, I'd like to thank Mr. Corroney for the effort he put in to make it here today. We spent about 20 minutes trying to get his Mac IRC to work. He really did a great job! :)

K-Idanian: Mr. Corroney, when you have completed answering a question, please type -fin- :)

JCorroney: Thanks, Kieran. I've never used an IRC before but I'm not completely computer illiterate. I've been doing alot of digital artwork on my Mac for years now :)

K-Idanian: I guess the first question has to be which Star Wars movie do you enjoy the most and why?

JCorroney: Good question... hard question. My favorite one has to be a New Hope I think.

* Sterling` is now known as Sterling

JCorroney: It has the best balance of them all I think. Empire looks the greatest though and has more edge.

* CalornXX has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: ESB is the most artistic, best directed, best written movie but ANH is more fun for me.

JCorroney: Though I can't wait for AotC on DVD so that will be my new favorite I think. -fin-

K-Idanian: Do you believe any of the Star Wars movies should be changed in anyway? Or do you think something should have been different - in your point of view?

JCorroney: By the way, I'm not the best typist so sorry about the misspells(?).

K-Idanian: Don't worry, Mr. Corroney. :)

* Selth has left #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: Well, all the SW films have their own problems, most notably dialogue or acting at times but for better or worse these are George Lucas' stories. His visions. He doesn't ask us to love them so much, we just do because they are great films and because they can feel so personal to us we can be critical of them more I suppose.

* `Alucard has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: But I wouldn't change anything about them really personally. I love them all and think the positive merits of each SW film outweighs the negative aspects. -fin-

JCorroney: I know that sounds like a brainwash answer so my LFL implant must be kicking in ;) -fin-

K-Idanian: (please msg all interview questions to K-Idanian)

K-Idanian: GA Ronin would like to know: How closely do you work with LucasFilm when you do your work? Do you collaborate daily, weekly, monthly, etc.? Does LFL just review and approve your work or do they get involved with day to day stuff?

* Dash- has joined #emperor's_hammer

* ltflchris has joined #emperor's_hammer

* LilHawke has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney:I work with LFL on a per project basis, about once a month, sometimes more. Most often I'm working through a licensee like Wizards of the Coast or Paizo Publishing so they are the middle persons.

JCorroney: Though when I was creating art for HoloNet News.com earlier this year I was woking with LFL directly on a daily basis for over three months.

JCorroney: I have contacts there and keep in touch with folks at the Ranch who are friends and for reference purposes when I'm illustrating projects for Star Wars. -fin-

* MAJ_RazoR has joined #emperor's_hammer

GA_Ronin Don't forget to tell GL how much you love our club...hehe.

GA_Ronin: (shameless plug)

JCorroney: Well, I'm so low on the LFL foodchain I've never actually spoke to ol' Uncle George so I don't think I'll get the chance... sorry! :) -fin-

K-Idanian FA Brad would like to know: How did you get started in your artistic career and what do you credit to be your best support?

* `Kerrigan has joined #emperor's_hammer

* Bi|bo has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: I go started early. Right after I saw the first SW film in 1977 my mom bought me my first comic book, the Star Wars movie adaptation from Marvel. That inspired to just start drawing more in general.

* Madon-DVD has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: I was then going to art lessons on the weekends and took art in high school pretty seriously. I knew I wanted to go to an art school and pursue illustration as a career.

* RexalQel has quit IRC (Ping timeout)

JCorroney: As soon as I graduated art college with my BFA in Illustration in 1996 I ended up freelancing as an artist for West End Games on their SW RPG. That's where the real work in my career started. -fin-

K-Idanian: It's interesting how you loved art when you were little. Sometimes people grow out of their love when they grow up.

JCorroney: My folks were really positive about supporting anything I loved at that age so I love them for that. I was also a big SW freak when I was that little so they were constanly spoiling me with SW toys :)

K-Idanian: lol. Gotta love the big Star Wars room! :)

JCorroney: So I suppose the positive support in my hobbies really helped me to not lose interest in drawing. -fin-

K-Idanian: -Mage- would like to know: Do you have a favorite Star Wars species?

* LilHawke has joined #emperor's_hammer

* Vortexian has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: Let's see favorite SW species...

JCorroney: I like Wookiees :)

JCorroney: If I knew what species Yoda was I would say that species. -fin-

K-Idanian: They never released that... I'm not sure why. I just call them the 'Yodas'. :)

* Madon-DVD is now known as Madon-AFK

K-Idanian: GA Ronin and myself would like to know: Do you need permission from LucasFilm (or a licensee) to conduct these type of interviews ?

* `M has joined #emperor's_hammer

* LilHawke has left #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: Like I said, I'm so low on the ladder they probably wouldn't care one way or another about me doing these loose interviews. Though I do have to be careful in what I say in regards to any current projects I have in the works. I do have to get permission when a fan publication wants an interview or wants to publish my work though. -fin-

* LilHawke has joined #emperor's_hammer

K-Idanian: From MAJ_Auto: Would you be willing to create a graphic of the EH's Fleet for us?

* HA_Royal has joined #emperor's_hammer

* Lt_Kuro has joined #emperor's_hammer

JCorroney: Hmmm... not sure about that one ;) I wouldn't mind if I had the time but I get requests for doing artwork for fans all the time and that usually falls into my commissioned work at that point. I'm really not into just designing graphics for folks. I can do that kind of work using Freehand or Illustrator programs but prefer more involved illustration like characters, action scenes, storytelling stuff that's more fun for me.

JCorroney: I do accept commission assignments so if you'd like me to illustrate for you check out the guidelines in my Stuff to Buy at my official website, www.joecorroney.com. -fin-

GA_Ronin: I'll check into it! :)

JCorroney: Great!

See ya back here next week for part two of this interview!
-Joe
