Art tips and techniques, reviews and interviews from my studio. Archived here and at World Famous Comics. Comics 101 for 01/31/2002 Tips on Portfolio Submissions Dear Joe,Hi Kristian, I'm glad you are really enjoying Sketch magazine so far and are getting so much out of it. I know letters like this really make our publisher Bob Hickey happy since the concept for Sketch magazine was his from the beginning. He really deserves alot of the credit for having the vision, creativity, and energy for putting this thing together. As just a contributor I feel honored to participate since I'm a comic book fan first and foremost. Just like you I'm really appreciating the info and tips this magazine puts out and look forward to everyone's articles each issue. The best advice I can give on submitting a portfolio to a comic book or gaming company like White Wolf is to go to your comic or hobby store and open up a copy of their most current book or product. Bring some pen and paper so you can write down the contact info if you don't want to buy the actual book. Usually within the credits on the first few pages you can find the address of the company, current editor and art director names who you should mail samples to, and sometimes even a phone number or email address for these folks who you should contact. Write it all down and put together a package containing quality prints or xeroxes of your work, along with a cover letter, resume' and your contact info and mail it off. I usually send multiple copies to a company who I'm trying to freelance for the first time with. By sending a copy of my submission to a few of the editors and art directors, it makes a stronger impression and it also shows how serious and eager you are to get a start with their company. You can find even more tips on preparing your portfolio and contacting companies for work in my Archives for my previous Comics 101 columns. Also, a new Comics 101 step by step article featuring my Star Wars art will also discuss the steps I took to establishing myself as a Star Wars artist for Lucasfilm and Wizards of the Coast. Keep an eye out on for this upcoming Comics 101 feature article very soon. And thanks for reading Sketch magazine! See ya next week! -Joe Recent Columns:
